The day was a special one! South Africa playing their first match, that too in England’s back yard. Oval is famous for many thrilling encounters. South Africa bowled very well. But, the English Batsman were of sterner stuff.
England started their World Cup 2019 campaign with a 104-run thrashing of South Africa, with 61 balls left in the game. What a disdainful start for SA.
Ben stokes hailed as the new Botham showed what kind of a performer He is!!
Ben Stokes dominated the ICC World Cup 2019 opening match between England and South Africa at Kensington Oval, London, on Thursday. The 27-year-old all-rounder top-scored for England with 89 runs off 79 balls, including nine boundaries, claimed two wickets, took two catches and effected a run out of Dwaine Pretorius (1).
However, the catch that helped Adil Rashid dismiss AndilePhehlukwayo (24) in the 35th over impressed everyone on and off the field of World Cup 2019 opener.
Ben Stokes with the bat, Ben Stokes with the ball, Ben Stokes on the field!
Stokes, back-pedaling and diving, held a brilliant one-handed catch in the deep to dismiss Phehlukwayo, a crucial dismissal that derailed South Africa’s chase. There was a threat, that stokes may have fallen, somersaulted to the ground against gravity. But, the strong and athletic Stokes stunned every one.
No worries about the Player of the Match. Hail Ben stokes!!
JofraArcher, the new find has come out very dominant, as seen in the recently concluded IPL 2019, did the early damage with the ball, the fast bowler taking three for 27 in seven overs.
Stokes was one of four England batsmen who got to 50 on a tricky surface, with CaptainEoin Morgan (57), Jason Roy (54) and Root (51) all out soon after reaching the landmark.
The left-handed batsman saw his 79-ball knock end in the penultimate over when caught at third man following a reverse hit off paceman Lungi Ngidi (three for 66). Lungi Ngidi is going from strength to strength.
Also the tall and well-built KagisoRabada. They both have youth in their strides and are very fast in their delivery strides.
SA missing Devilliers, it can be seen. Also the quickie dale Steyn is out due to a shoulder injury.
No wonder, The South Africans will bounce back. But, going down without a fight yesterday was a pill a bit too bitter to swallow!
Imran Tahir again showed what class he is made of! He not only bagged two wickets, but also troubled the batsmen.
Quinton De Cock gave a rollicking start with a 74 balls 68 with 6 fours and 2 sixes. He and Rassie van der Dussen were the only batsmen to score fifties.
English opener who tore IPl bowlers went for a duck. Imran Tahir struck early!
The other English batsmen stood their ground and put up a scintillating performance. Still, one cannot write off the Proteas, as they are also a team which has time and again bounced back and proved their mettle!
They still hold the highest run chasing record in one dayers…..against Ausssies!!
It seems very rare that their record will be smashed soon!
